The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced that it is again considering changes to its scoring system
During the recent Dutch Open Tournament a new system was trialed and is set to be reviewed later this month along with three other suggested alternatives to the current scoring system.
Currently matches are played as best of three sets, played to 21 with setting up to 29, where upon next point wins. The new structure trialed in Holland saw matches played as best of five sets but instead of playing to 21, first to 11 wins and there is no setting – so at 10-10, next point wins.
How does this change matches? Well although you’d probably need a similar number of points to win a match overall, the division into more, lower scoring games means each point is that bit more valuable and a good start is vital. This should make some of the rallies more intense as every point is a bit more important.
The BWF say they are “looking at the current scoring system and how this could be improved so generations to come continue enjoying badminton at its best.” It could be argued that shorter, more intense games would make the game more exciting for the viewers and in some ways it is more interesting to watch. However the suggested changes don’t seem to have gained much support so far. In fact, there is a Facebook page set up purely for people to register their views.
If the BWF pushes ahead with any of these new scoring systems we could see it introduced in our Bristol league matches in the next few seasons.
