Captain’s report – Mixed 1

We’re now a couple of months into the new season and Matt offered a round up of Mixed 1’s season so far: ‘After romping to the league title in Division 3 last season Mixed 1 have found that Division 2 truly is another level. With the primary purpose surviving and consolidating, an opening day battering to Bristol and District’s 3rd team showed that a real improvement was required if we were to not be relegated back down to Division 3 come the end of the season.  The following three games showed all hope is not lost with two credible draws and a sizeable win showing that results can be achieved with a little bit of focus. With four out of six teams [in the division] well matched up, every point will need to be fought for to avoid dropping back down to whence we came‘.

Progress on all fronts

With about two thirds of the league season gone, Academy’s teams are looking pretty strong across the board. Last night’s (25 Jan) win for Mixed 1 maintains their 100% winning record. They have now won six matches on the spin this season and even more impressively are yet to drop more than a point in any match. The ladies are on a similarly strong run and are also unbeaten this season with their draw away at Kingsdown the only minor blemish from the seven matches they have played so far. Unsurprisingly, both teams are currently sitting at the top of their divisions and look to be pushing for promotion. And, if the ladies can maintain their form for their remaining three matches they are on course to become Academy’s first Division 1 team. The battle for Men’s Division 4b looks to be a tighter affair with Academy and St Ursula’s fighting for the top spot. At this stage, both teams are on the same number of points although St Ursula’s have played less matches so currently sit top of the division. It looks like it could go down to the wire with the men’s final match, at home to St Ursula’s on 8 March, being the decider.

At this point it’s difficult to draw very much from the results for Mixed 2 and Mens 2. The men appear to be finding North Somerset Division 1 significantly harder than Division 2 was last year but with postponements, results not having been entered yet and the fact that the bulk of their fixtures are arranged towards the end of the season, their actual standings in their divisions are a bit unknown at present.

Settling in nicely

Academy’s ladies, who stepped up to Division 2 this season seem to be acclimatising well. They won their second match of the season on Monday and have now taken 10 points from a possible 12 in their first two matches. On paper, Monday’s match away against St Ursula’s 1 looked to be one of their trickier assignments. They were aided buy the opposition only being able to field three players, thereby forfeiting half the possible points on offer. However, this shouldn’t detract from the convincing performance in the other three pairings which gained the Ladies all six points.

Academy’s Men also continued their resurgent form following their opening day defeat with a battling 5-1 win away at Severnvale. Captain Mark commented that despite the comfortable scoreline this had been much closer than it appears with at least half of the pairings going to deciders and the scoreline in a number of games passing 21.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other

Academy’s Men kicked off the league season this week with two matches in quick succession. The first saw them receive a demoralising 6-0 thumping away to a strong St Ursula’s line up. This fixture was always going to be one of their toughest and the scoreline reflects this with a couple of close games but only one match-up requiring a decider.  None the less, the team were still very disappointed not to have come away with anything.

Thankfully, they had a chance to exorcise that loss only a couple of days later with the visit of Frampton Cotterell. A chance they duly took, and in a similarly one sided affair Academy claimed all six points.

The team have a couple of weeks break now before a trip to Severnvale 3 where they will be hoping for more of the same.

Final league standings

So with the league season now closed and all results in (except Mens 2 who still have a match in the North Somerset League to play) it’s been a great year for Academy Badminton Club’s teams. Three of our five teams have been promoted and all as division champions. Mixed 2 pipped Bishop Road 2 to the top spot in Division 5a by one point. Our ladies stormed to the Division 3 title dropping only 11 points along the way and Mens 2 romped home in North Somerset Division 2 with a couple of matches to spare. Mens 1 and Mixed 1 both stayed out of trouble and finished their seasons safely in mid table. That represents a particularly strong performance from Mixed 1 off the back of two straight promotions. So the final league standings for 2015-2016 are:

Bristol Leagues
Mixed 1 – 4th in Division 3 – 27/60 points
Mixed 2 – Winners of Division 5a – 33/48 points

Ladies – Winners of Division 3 – 49/60 points

Mens 1 – 3rd in Division 4b – 34/60 points

North Somerset League
Mens 2 – Winners of Division 2 – 37 points and game in hand
